Miu Miu has a knack for making the It-piece each season.
The sun has set on summer and with it the viral Miu Miu micro mini skirt – but as the chill settles in, the street style set have found a surprising way to stay snug. Yes, it’s time you bought some (chic) leg warmers.
Ribbed knit warmers and thick socks were worn with branded ballet slippers at Miu Miu’s autumn winter 2022 collection, in an eye catching nod to the tubular accessory’s origins.
Traditionally the items are worn by dancers to keep leg muscles warm to avoid cramp after stretching, and surged in popularity during the 80s thanks to dancers David Lee and Trisha Kate who opened a leg warmer centric boutique in New York’s East Village.
The retro style, which until recently has been the reserve of disco dress up parties, is back – just don’t get them neon this time around.
At Fendi’s New York Fashion Week show last month, creative director Kim Jones gave them a new spin in green, silver and pale blue satin and layered them with mini baguette ankle bags. Xuly Bët, the 90s founded label by Malian and Senegalese fashion designer Lamine Badian Kouyaté did them in tartans and thick white knits pulled over platform heels for her latest collection, while the cool-girl Berlin based Ottolinger presented inspired, faux fur warmers for their autumn winter 2022.
There are plenty runway examples, but how can you actually pull off a leg warmer? Vogue Editor Julia Hobbs proved it is not too difficult during September’s London Fashion Week. Hers, the beige version from Miu Miu, were scrunched up over a pair of baggy cargo trousers, worn with the runway ballet slippers and finished with a simple Prada vest.
Danish stylist Emili Sindlev wore her white Prada embroidered mohair pair with high heels and a Louis Vuitton green bomber during Copenhagen Fashion Week in August, while YouTuber Olivia Neil committed to the full Miu Miu look in a crystal embellished mini dress, grey warmers and slippers when she sat front row at the brand’s SS23 show at the beginning of October.
