Australian sporting legend Sam Kerr and her fellow football-playing fiancée Kristie Mewis brought joy to the world yesterday by announcing their pregnancy. However, the special moment was unfortunately tainted by homophobes who flooded social media with vile comments. Thankfully, fans across the globe have rallied behind the duo, shutting down the online trolls.
In a wholesome Instagram post on Monday, Kerr, 31, and Mewis, 33, announced they’re expecting a baby through photobooth snaps featuring Mewis’ belly and a sonogram.
“Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” Kerr wrote alongside the sweet post.
Although the announcement was met with well wishes and congratulations, it wasn’t long before a bunch of online trolls came crashing through floodgates with fucked up comments.
One punter asked “how” while another questioned what their striker was doing. As a result, the footballing duo, Kerr’s team Chelsea FC and Sky Sports Women’s Super League turned off the comments to their post.
Thankfully, a plethora of supporters jumped onto X (formerly Twitter) to slam the online haters, calling them out for their homophobic and sexist rhetoric.
“The amount of homophobia under the Sam Kerr Kristie Mewis pregnancy announcement is so disheartening,” one fan wrote.
“Men claim they don’t care about women’s football but then shockingly can’t help but chime in with their unwanted opinion on Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis having a baby like,” another posted on X.
“The amount of homophobia I’ve seen about Sam and Kristie’s pregnancy announcement is so vile the fact we’re in 2024 and still got this shit happening to get a grip,” wrote a third.
BBC sports journalist Tom Overend blasted the homophobic comments, labelling the online actions of trolls “extremely disappointing”.
Extremely disappointing to see even the slightest negative reaction to Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis’s fantastic news.

Couple are free to do what they choose, and you can be a good parent whatever your gender, creed, colour or anything.
We are in 2024 folks!
Chelsea Pride, the official LGBTQIA+ supporters group for the club, condemned the online comments, writing in its statement that “homophobia has no place in football”.
“Over the weekend and today, our club was forced to shut down and even delete posts, posts that have been shining moments of joy, from powerful symbolism of Rainbow Laces to the incredible news that Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis will welcome a child in 2025,” the organisation wrote.
“‘No to Hate’ isn’t just a slogan; it’s a battle cry. It’s a reminder that we must keep fighting for what is right, for true acceptance, and for a game that embraces everyone without exception.
“We refuse to stand by in silence.”
At the time of writing, Kerr and Mewis have not responded to the trolls. However, the pair have reopened the comments to their beautiful announcement.
Chelsea FC Women still have the comments to their post closed.
Kerr and Mewis’ announcement comes the same week the Women’s Super League launched the Rainbow Laces campaign which promotes LGBTQIA+ inclusions and visibility within football.
It is honestly baffling, disheartening and icky that folks still feel comfortable spewing their hateful views on such a beautiful, wholesome post.
As Overend said, it is extremely disappointing to see such behaviour and buffoonery in 2024.
Wishing Kerr and Mewis all the best for their 2025 bébé who will no doubt be playing for Australia in the future!
