Fans all say the same thing as John Cleese set to star in new series of Fawlty Towers

Weston actor John Cleese is set to star in a brand new series of Fawlty Towers alongside his daughter, Camilla.

Featuring some of the original cast, the much-loved sitcom is being revived by Castle Rock Entertainment - but fans aren't so sure it's going to work.

It's understood the series will explore how cynical Basil navigates the modern world.

Actor Rob Reiner, his wife and actress Michele Reiner, director and producer Matthew George and Derrick Rossi will act as executive producers on the series.

Cleese, who was born in Weston-super-Mare, said: “What I like about Matt is that, unlike many producers, he really ‘gets’ the creative process. When we first met, he offered an excellent first idea, and then Matt, my daughter Camilla, and I had one of the best creative sessions I can remember.

“By dessert we had an overall concept so good that, a few days later, it won the approval of Rob and Michele Reiner. Camilla and I look forward enormously to expanding it into a series.”

But fans have taken to social media to voice their worries about the remake. One person said: "Much as I loved Fawlty Towers, I’m not sure it’s a good idea for John Cleese to bring it back. It was 12 episodes of unwoke comedy perfection."

Another wrote: "Fawlty Towers revival eh? My past experience of classic show revival is great disappointment. Dad’s Army for one. You cannot match or improve on a superb product which still lives in the memory."

Even presenter Andrew Neil had reservations, he tweeted: "I suspect most folks will think remaking Fawlty Towers just about the worst idea imaginable. Other than the return of Liz Truss as PM, natch."
