Valve fans are a different breed. The stuff I’ve seen them make over the years, from small-time projects to full-blown video games that once upon a time the company would just straight-up acquire and publish as actual titles, is genuinely inspirational. It seems there’s never a limit to their creativity, and as we can see from this one fan’s passion project, they can even travel through time.
As first spotted by GamesRadar, a Valve fan and video game developer called Bonnie Studios successfully managed to port Half-Life 1 to the original PlayStation, and no, it’s not just an emulator layer. They programmed an actual renderer and game runtime in the Rust programming language, allowing Sony’s inaugural console to actually, really, run Valve’s inaugural title. Like poetry.
The thing is, though, the game looks and runs like s**t. That isn’t to throw shade at Bonnie Studios, who’s done tremendous work as-is. It’s just that now, with the thing actually running on the PS1, you really understand why Valve itself never decided upon creating this port, despite later embracing other consoles (even though PC stayed, to this day, its main venue).
