Family's anger as toddler 'escapes from nursery close to main road unnoticed'

A furious family has hit out after a toddler escaped unnoticed from a nursery close to a busy main road along with another child in Scotland.

The little boy managed to elude workers at Wee Gems Nursery in Broxborn, West Lothian - and was found by parents in the car park.

He went outside with another boy on Monday, reports the Daily Record.

Staff at the nursery allegedly failed to notice the children were missing and they were later spotted in the car park by parents arriving to pick their kids up.

The toddler's grandmother said in an online post: "My grandson was allowed to walk out of Wee Gems Nursery in Broxburn on Monday without being noticed... Luckily parents coming to pick up their child noticed him in the car park and alerted staff.

"While we are grateful he is okay, the nursery is right next to a busy road, slap bang in the middle of a busy truck-laden industrial estate.

"They have since sent me an email listing the things they are doing from today to keep the kids safe."

A spokesperson for Wee Gems Nursery told the Daily Record: “We are taking this incident extremely seriously.

"We have launched a full investigation and taken immediate steps to ensure this could not happen again.

“We have apologised to the families concerned and informed the Care Inspectorate and West Lothian Council.

“We have established that a garden gate wasn’t bolted properly, and our maintenance team has now added an additional padlock for increased security.

“The safety and security of all the children in our care is our highest priority and we have reviewed and created additional risk assessments, as well as making changes to the garden to make it easier for our staff to safely monitor the children’s movements.”
