Family Blames Hospital For Woman's Death After Abortion Complications

Yvonne Furneaux passed away at 98 due to complications from a stroke.

Amber Thurman, a 28-year-old woman from Georgia, tragically passed away in 2022 after experiencing complications from a medication abortion. She sought medical care at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge for a dilation and curettage procedure following the termination of her pregnancy. However, hospital staff reportedly delayed performing the procedure for about 20 hours.

High-profile civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump is representing Thurman's family in a lawsuit against the hospital. Crump asserts that the hospital, not Georgia's abortion laws, is to blame for Thurman's death. He emphasized that medical professionals had a duty to intervene and save her life, as there were no legal barriers preventing them from doing so.

Georgia's abortion laws, including the LIFE Act signed by Governor Brian Kemp in 2019, prohibit abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for medical emergencies or medically futile pregnancies. The recent overturning of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court has reignited debates over abortion rights.

Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats have cited Thurman's death as a consequence of restrictive abortion laws, criticizing the lack of access to timely and essential healthcare services. However, OB-GYNs have refuted this narrative, arguing that Georgia's laws allow for medical interventions to save women's lives.

Thurman's stepfather, Elijah Warren, has urged politicians to refrain from politicizing her death, emphasizing that the focus should be on holding the hospital accountable for negligence rather than solely blaming legislative restrictions. Warren believes that proper medical care could have prevented Thurman's tragic demise.

As the legal proceedings unfold and discussions surrounding abortion laws continue, Thurman's family seeks justice and accountability for the circumstances that led to her untimely passing.
