Federal safety regulators are telling families to stop using about 19,000 Bonnlo metal bunk beds immediately because the slats that hold up the top bunk can fail. When they give way, the frame and top bunk can collapse onto the bed below, where a child may be sleeping.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warning, issued Oct. 1, says the defect poses a risk of serious injury or death from asphyxiation and injury hazards. The agency is aware of nine reports of slat failures, including three cases in which the top bunk fell onto the lower bunk. No injuries have been reported.
