Families to get energy bill discounts if they avoid using energy at peak times

Households could soon be given the chance to cut their electricity bills if they avoid using high-powered machines in peak times, according to reports. The scheme is thought to be announced in the next two weeks.

By not using appliances that use a lot of energy, such as ovens and washing machines, during peak times, families will be able to save money, according to the BBC. It is thought the service will be available to households that have a smart meter installed.

Energy bills have increased drastically this year, threatening to plunge thousands into fuel poverty. Prices are expected to surge again in October with the average household bill forecast to hit £4,650 in January.

The scheme will be run by National Grid ESO. Speaking to the BBC, a spokesman for the company said: "We are developing a new service that will be available for consumers to benefit from across this winter and will be announcing further information soon."

More details about the plans are set to be released in the next two weeks. This will include how the scheme will work and how much money will be paid back to customers.

Reports suggest the amount of money repaid to households could be as much as £6 per kWh of energy saved. The rebate is expected to be available to those that avoid using high-energy appliances during the hours of 5pm and 8pm. High-energy appliances include items such as tumble dryers, dishwashers and games consoles.

National Grid is currently carrying out consultations with energy suppliers and the UK's energy regulator Ofgem. The National Grid is hosting webinars with energy firms and is asking for feedback on its proposals.
