Families of detained Chinese Christians cling to faith in legal limbo

Ren Zhong, the husband of detained pastor Wang Cong, reads a copy of the Bible and prays with his daughter Huanle at their house in Beihai, southern China's Guangxi province on July 29, 2026. Last October, Chinese authorities detained more than 20 of Zion's members, one of a series of similar clamp downs across the country recently. BEIHAI — Clasping her hands together in prayer, four-year-old Huanle tells God she misses her mum, whom she has not seen since Chinese authorities raided their home last year in a crackdown on their unregistered church.

Huanle's mother Wang Cong is a pastor at Zion Church, one of China's largest "underground" churches where some Christians choose to worship instead of government-regulated ones.
