Families hit the beach as heatwave hits Merseyside

Families flocked to Merseyside's coastline on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Temperatures hovered around 29C today (July 17) and the heatwave is set to stretch to Tuesday. Warnings are now in place to protect public health.

Southport beach, one of Merseyside's classic destinations, was packed today as families arrived with buckets, spades and windbreakers. Ice cream vendors enjoyed a busy day as the mercury just kept rising.

There was classic fun as mums sat on deck chairs and dads dug holes in the sand for children to play in. And over at New Brighton the crowds splashed around in the sea as the tide came in.

Several public authorities have now issued warnings as the heat wave is set to last for two more days. The warnings include avoiding direct exposure to the sun during the day, looking out for children and the elderly.

The public have been advised to work from home and avoid travelling if possible. The risks of swimming in cold water during a heatwave have also been highlighted.

On Merseyside temperatures are set to hover around the 30C mark until Wednesday. There are concerns temperatures could reach the 40C mark in other parts of the country.
