Families fear for children as flytipping creates plague of rats in their homes

Families say they are afraid to let children play in their gardens thanks to an infestation of rats caused by fly-tipping in a lane - with the animals now chewing through walls and leaving their babies behind. Neighbours say they have been terrorised by rats for months - fighting a daily battle to keep them out of their properties.

Alexandra Barlow, who lives with her partner Daniel Gerencser and eight-month-old daughter Laura, says the problems started two years ago. As fly-tipping in the area increased, rat sightings on the street grew – with residents eventually finding them inside their homes

Alexandra told the Manchester Evening News:“Over time, people ... started leaving rubbish out on the back street, further down our end. It’s almost like fly-tipping is contagious.
