'Families are pushed into despair as ministers seem blind to cost of living crisis'

Without urgent Government action, millions face a calamitous winter of soaring energy prices.

Analysts are warning average gas and electricity bills will reach £3,200 a year by October.

Ministers appear blind to the disaster heading our way. More families will be forced to choose between heating and eating, more elderly people will die from cold and more businesses will struggle to stay afloat.

It is possible we may have to follow countries such as Germany, which is already rationing energy, dimming street lights and closing swimming pools. While some blame can be laid on Russia, this crisis has also been caused by the Tories’ failure to make us more resilient to energy price shocks.

They wound down gas storage and failed to invest in alternative sources of power. The price for this incompetence is more families being pushed into destitution and despair.

Morals matter

Keir Starmer was adamant he had not breached Covid rules when he stopped for a meal during a campaign meeting.

And now he and deputy leader Angela Rayner have been vindicated after a thorough investigation by Durham Police concluded there was no case to answer.

They were victims of a smear campaign by opponents seeking to drag the Labour leader into the gutter of lawbreaking Boris Johnson.

Not all politicians are the same. We should not forget Mr Starmer had the honour and dignity to say he would resign if fined.

The contrast with the shameless behaviour of the departing PM could not be starker.

Decency and standards matter. Which is why one party leader is heading for the exit and the other towards government.

Fast seller

A clapped out vintage Ferrari discovered in a Welsh garage has sold for more than £100,000.

The owner must have driven a hard bargain.
