Famed nature filmmaker Doug Allan to wow Dublin audience with live show about impressive career

Doug Allan is set to bring his live show, It's A Wrap, to the Axis Theatre in Ballymun on November 2 as well as a number of other venues around Ireland.

Doug is an award winning natural history photographer, documentary filmmaker, diver, author and public speaker. The titles he has worked on over his impressive career include mega popular shows like Blue Planet and Planet Earth.

Doug is one of the few people in the world to witness some truly awe-inspiring natural scenes with his own eyes, particularly in Arctic regions. Emmy and BAFTA award winner's show in Dublin is part retrospective.

It's A Wrap will also Doug’s perspective on climate change and its impacts on the world’s wild places. Having seen the effects of climate change and human behaviour on the natural world first-hand over his decades-long career as a nature filmmaker, Doug is perhaps one of the best people to hear from on this matter.

Doug spoke to Dublin Live about what audiences can expect from his shows in Ireland. He revealed: "We'll be looking at sequences that have been turning points or real highlight for me and that leave you feeling different having seen them.

"You might be surprised, or it might just be being aware of the fragility of nature. There will also be ones I filmed recently and ones from 20 years ago, comparing what we're seeing now with what we've seen before, and what's been happening to the environment.

"I'll be telling some funny stories, some adventurous stories and talk about things that I haven't mentioned before anywhere."

Hinting at some of the wow-inducing sequences he will take audiences through, Doug revealed: "I'll certainly be looking at killer whale behaviour, when they swim together to make a wave to wash over the ice to take out the seal. I'll be telling the full story behind that.

"That was quite a holy grail for me. I looked for that sequence for about 25 years before I was finally successful with it.

"We'll also be looking at penguins, polar bears and some shots from up north. Probably some shots from a Brian Cox series I worked on where I went diving underneath icebergs."

Naturally, Doug has seen the effects of climate change first hand, having revisited environments over the span of his career. This is something that will play a part in the show, offering the audience a unique perspective on the issue.

"When you see animals suffering because of climate change, or seeing a seal wrapped in a fishing net, that's when I get sad then very quickly angry, when I think that we as humans could prevent that sort of suffering for the animals," he explained.

"The impact of human beings on the natural world is something that we film makers should be incorporating into the films we make. The way I can speak about my time in the wild and things I've seen, that gives you certain credibility."

Additionally, Doug's show will touch on "techniques and equipment" used to capture some now well known nature sequences, giving the audience the answer to a question they're bound to have; how on earth do they capture those shots?
