A Falkirk councillor who resigned from the SNP at the weekend will appear in court next week over an alleged assault.
Niall Coleman, who represents Bonnybridge and Larbert, is also the convener of Falkirk Council's licensing board.
He resigned suddenly from the SNP on Saturday, saying it was for "personal reasons" and adding that he was unable to comment further.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a 39-year-old man has been charged in connection with a reported assault in the Russel Street area of Falkirk.
"He is expected to appear at Falkirk Sheriff Court on Wednesday, March 23.”
Falkirk Council leader Cecil Meiklejohn confirmed that Cllr Coleman submitted his resignation to the party on Saturday, March 12, citing personal reasons, and that it had been accepted.
She said she would not be making any further comment.
Mr Coleman became a councillor in a by-election in 2018, following the death of his father, SNP councillor Tom Coleman.
It is understood that he had already announced that he would not be among the SNP candidates seeking re-election to the council in May.
