The Falcons are expected to sign defensive tackle David Onyemata after the new league year begins Wednesday, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Monday.
As of now, Garafolo reports the two sides have agreed to the terms of a deal, which amounts to a three-year, $35 million contract with $24.5 million guaranteed over two years. Onyemata will earn almost $12 million per season with this new deal.
Onyemata spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Saints. His contract with the Saints expires when the 2022 league year ends Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET.
Onyemata will reunite with former Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen, who recently was hired as the Falcons’ new defensive coordinator. Nielsen spent six seasons in New Orleans, working with Onyemata every season except his rookie year.
Last season, Onyemata started in all 17 games, finishing with 36 tackles and five sacks.
