Latvia have emerged as the likely visitors to Dublin next March ahead of Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualification opener against France.
Stephen Kenny’s men will play a friendly in the week leading up to their Euro 2024 kick-off against the current world champions.
Kenny was giving little away about the identity of the friendly opponents, although it is believed that the FAI have already agreed the fixture with their Latvian counterparts.
They open up their qualification campaign on March 28 away to Wales - and would use their trip to Dublin to prepare for the clash against Rob Page’s World Cup hopefuls.
Ireland and Latvia are two of six European sides that are not in competitive action in the first round of qualifiers.
The Boys in Green host France on March 27, before games away to Greece and at home to Gibraltar in June.
Asked about his friendly plans, Kenny said: “We just want to focus on France. We’re not looking for a gruelling game coming into the French one.
“I’m not sure there’s loads of teams available because there are qualifiers on that week.
“The international department is working on it and I don’t have a preference.
“We probably won’t put our first team in that friendly. We’ll mix and match to get ready for France.
“France will be a special night in everyone’s life. It’s a great chance against the previous World Cup. A big challenge so we’ve to do the best we can.”
