Talks have taken place about a potential visit to Dublin next month of a Premier League side.
Mirror Sport has learned that discussions took place last month at FAI level regarding an Aviva Stadium fixture between an unnamed English top-flight club and a League of Ireland representative side.
This development has emerged as Australian media reported on Tuesday morning on plans for a League of Ireland XI to visit Perth for a three-game series.
A League side Perth Glory would be one of the opponents, according to reports, with competitive football in Australia going on a break for the duration of the World Cup.
While there has been no comment so far from Abbotstown on the speculation Down Under, Mirror Sport has been told that a number of senior League of Ireland players were approached about a potential Aviva Stadium clash against English opposition.
The discussions, described by an insider as “brief”, took place over a month ago, with the proposed match being pencilled in after the end of the League of Ireland season and during the Premier League’s World Cup hiatus.
