Derry City star Cameron McJannet says manager Ruaidhri Higgins’ preparations for last month’s FAI Cup final were so good that nothing was going to stop the Candystripes from claiming the trophy.
McJannet was speaking as he was named SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers Ireland Player of the Month for November.
He won the award largely for his two-goal heroics in the 4-0 Aviva Stadium win against Shelbourne.
He said: “I think the gaffer and the staff set us up perfectly, almost to the point where the chances of it going wrong were very small.
“The result and performance showed it. Our tactics and everything were spot on.
“I never thought I’d score two. I was maybe imagining a clean sheet or something, but the two goals were more than a cherry on top.
“It was an unbelievable day. To see how many people we made happy was unbelievable.”
As for becoming the second Derry City player to win the award this year, after Jamie McGonigle in April, he said: “It's great. I feel proud and honoured.
“I could look at it and say it was only half a month and two games, but obviously I’ll take it! I’m very happy.”
McJannet joined Derry in 2020 after coming through the ranks at Stoke City. He has played 83 times in all competitions for the Ryan McBride Brandywell side.
He finished first in the vote of SWI members, ahead of Thomas Lonergan, who scored the goal that kept UCD in the Premier Division for another season, and Derry City teammate Patrick McEleney.
