A FACTORY at Redhead went up in flames overnight, with a high-alert level issued as the building was completely engulfed by the blaze.
Fire crews were called to the building, an auto repair and restoration business on Kalaroo Road, just before 11pm on Sunday September 22.
Crews immediately donned breathing apparatus as the factory was full of highly-flammable materials including paint thinners, a forklift and several vehicles. Due to the fuel load inside the building the fire spread quickly and crews were forced to upgrade the site to an alarm level three.
This is a high alert level and saw eight trucks rush to the scene, along with police and paramedics.
"We had some initial explosions," a spokesman for Fire and Rescue NSW said.
"We had to setup a restricted access zone around the building. It was a matter of trying to use what access we had through holes in the building to get water into it. Then we were able to open one of the roller doors, it collapsed, so we pulled it down and had good access to a lot of the building to put water into it."
All up 16 crews were sent out to the site overnight and two teams remained on scene at 8am Monday, as the site continued to burn.
The Environmental Protection Authority has been contacted due to the chemicals inside the business and fire fighters are expected to hand the scene over to police.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
