Bosses of Wayne Birkett - who was reportedly left seriously injured when he was run down at a bus stop during the Nottingham attacks - say they remain focused on supporting their colleague and others affected by the dreadful violence. The factory worker was said to have got off a bus early so he could walk to work at the ABB Furse factory in Wilford Road, a lightning protection company on the city centre border with The Meadows.
But he was hit by a van in the city centre after getting off the bus. Mr Birkett, a Leeds United fan originally from Newark but living in Nottingham, was one of three people struck by a van in the city centre rampage earlier this week. The 58-year-old was said to have been left with serious head injuries.
Following the incident, the ABB UK Management team told Nottinghamshire Live: "ABB are appalled and saddened by the tragic events in Nottingham city centre on the 13th June 2023. With respect for those involved and their families, while we can confirm that an ABB employee was a victim in the incident, we will not comment on individual circumstances, but focus on supporting our colleague, our workforce and others directly affected.
"Our thoughts are with the people of Nottingham and the friends and families impacted by these tragic events."
Executives at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH), who run the Queen's Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, provided an update on Thursday (June 15) on the three patients injured in the van attacks. They said that one person had been discharged while two others remained in a stable condition in hospital.
The van driver is alleged to have stabbed two 19-year-old University of Nottingham students, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, in Ilkeston Road, Radford, before then allegedly stabbing 65-year-old Ian Coates in Magdala Road, Mapperley Park, and stealing his van.
Nottinghamshire Police have applied for another extension, lasting until the early hours of Saturday morning (June 17), to question a 31-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder.
