Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp down as thousands of angry users report outages

WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram all went down this evening leaving users unable to send messages or comment on posts.

Downdetector reported thousands of users having issues with the social media and messaging platforms across the UK and the world.

People jokingly called for Elon Musk to buy Meta - the company the behind the three brands - after he sealed a $44billion (£37.9 billion) takeover of rival Twitter.

Scores of users reported issues with Facebook from around 8.30pm.

Within minutes, Instagram and WhatsApp also went down.

Birmingham City FC were among those on Twitter to post about the situation.

The team is currently playing QPR in a Championship match.

The page said: "Facebook and Instagram have gone down, but Blues are two up!"

Mike Parnell said: "WhatsApp down = check twitter

"Facebook down = check twitter

"Instagram down = check twitter

"Where do we check if twitter goes down?"

By around 9pm, it appeared the services were being restored.

It comes after thousands of WhatsApp users were unable to access the messaging app on Tuesday for several hours.

A spokesperson for Meta said: "We know people had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp today. We have fixed the issue and apologise for any inconvenience."

Musk dramatically fired senior executives at Twitter just moments after completing his purchase of the company.

The tech billionaire and SpaceX founder became the owner of the social media platform early on Friday, following months of drawn-out negotiations and legal wrangles.

Musk, the world's richest man, had previously accused senior figures within the company of misleading him and investors over the number of fake accounts operating on the social media platform.

He had even been sued by Twitter when he threatened to pull out of the deal over the number of 'bots', before making a surprise U-turn to give it the go-ahead earlier this month.

None of Meta, Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp appear to have publicly addressed the issue as of yet.
