Fable rumored to be delayed, putting autumn 2026 release in doubt

Fable’s current autumn 2026 release may no longer happen, according to Jeff Grub, as the game has apparently been pushed internally.

According to him, Playground Games is still trying to release it this year, but is concerned about launching Fable around Grand Theft Auto 6.

Grubb also said a move beyond GTA 6’s release could push Fable into December, which in turn could push it even further into 2027.

That would be another shift for a game that has already moved once, as Microsoft initially intended to release Fable in 2025, but it was moved to 2026. In the official Xbox Podcast, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan said the team wanted to give the game more time and said the change was being made for the benefit of the game and the studio.

At Developer Direct in January, Xbox gave Fable its first extended deep dive and confirmed the current autumn 2026 window. That presentation covered how the story begins, character customization, the game’s morality system, combat, and its population of NPCs. In a longer interview on Xbox Wire, Playground Games GM and game director Ralph Fulton confirmed the project is a reboot and a new beginning for the series rather than a continuation of the old trilogy’s timeline.

The entire project has been in development for at least six years, as it was first announced by Microsoft during the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020. The developers went radio silent for a while before they came out with the first major trailer in 2023, confirming its existence and how far along in dev cycle the game was.

For now, there’s no official info of any kind about Fable’s delay. But considering Jeff Grub’s track record around Xbox games, it might as well be confirmed. Rockstar’s GTA 6 is the kind of game that warps the entire release calendar around itself, so if Xbox Game Studios decides to officially move Fable, there’s no shame in doing so.
