Fabian Schar has reflected on his screamer in the 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest - admitting he knew it was on its way in the net as soon as he struck it.
The Switzerland international has let fly from such a distance before against Burnley in the Premier League. But his wonder goal could not have arrived a better time with Forest starting to edge towards the hour mark still locked at 0-0.
Speaking after the game, Schar said: "As soon as I hit the ball, I thought I hit it quite well. We had a lot of chances and didn’t score so it was an important goal and it is always great to score in front of the home fans.
"Over the 90 minutes we played some great football – the goals didn’t come in the first half but we dominated possession and had a lot of chances."
Reflecting on the expectations at Newcastle this season, Schar told BBC Match of the Day: "The fans expect a lot from us this season, it’s electric when you are here and you just want to give them something to cheer.
"We have a strong team, a lot of quality but we know difficult the Premier League is as well. "We wanted to start the season well but we have to focus on the next game and see what happens."
