FA Cup fifth round rules on VAR and replays explained ahead of Man City and Manchester United ties

The FA Cup returns this week with Manchester City and Man United both in fifth round action.

Pep Guardiola's side are up against Championship opposition in Bristol City on Tuesday, while Erik ten Hag and company face West Ham United the following night, just three days after lifting the Carabao Cup trophy. All the last-16 ties are being played in midweek and here is all the information you need to know ahead of the action getting under way.

Are there replays?

No. That is the one major change from the previous round of the competition, as the fifth round is the first stage where ties ending as a draw after 90 minutes don't go to a replay.

So is there extra time?

Yes. Matches that are drawn when the full time whistle is blown now have 30 minutes of extra time and then a penalty shootout if required.

Is VAR in use?

Yes and no. Video Assistant Referee technology is only used at Premier League stadiums and not at the homes of teams playing in the Championship or below. So that means that City's tie on Tuesday will not feature VAR, because it is in Bristol, but United's match against West Ham will.

VAR Simon Hooper and assistant VAR Sian Massey-Ellis will be assisting the on-field Old Trafford officials. Michael Salisbury is the man in the middle, while Gary Beswick and Simon Long are his assistants.

Is yellow card accumulation a worry?

Yes. Yellow cards are wiped from the quarter-finals, meaning players must avoid collecting two before that stage to avoid an automatic one-match suspension. For United, the players walking that tightrope are Bruno Fernandes and Tyrell Malacia after being booked against Everton and Reading, respectively.

City have three players in danger of suspension after Rodri and Bernardo Silva were both shown yellow cards against Chelsea, while Ilkay Gundogan picked one up in the 93rd minute against Arsenal in the last round. Joao Cancelo also picked up a booking in the Chelsea tie but he is now out on loan at Bayern Munich.
