Lando Norris has won his first F1 world championship after a thrilling finale to the season in Abu Dhabi, edging out Max Verstappen by just two points.
The McLaren star, who becomes the 11th British F1 world champion, held off Red Bull’s four-time world champion, who won the grand prix, and teammate Oscar Piastri, who was second at Yas Marina Circuit.
Norris was in tears on his in-lap, his voice crackling over the radio, before he left the McLaren which carried him to glory. “It is incredible and pretty surreal”, Norris said. “It has been the last 16 or 17 years of my life chasing this dream and today we did it!”
And Lewis Hamilton had a heartwarming message for Norris after the McLaren driver sealed his maiden Formula 1 world championship.
Hamilton, who concluded a miserable first season for Ferrari without a podium all year, sought out compatriot Norris in the media pen after Sunday’s race. After a warm embrace between the pair, Hamilton said: “I’m so happy for you. I told you, you could do it.”

Lando Norris on winning the F1 world title 'my way'
13:00 , Jamie Braidwood"I believe I won the championship this year my way, by being a fair driver, by trying to be an honest driver.
"My motivation is not here to prove I’m better than someone else. That’s not what makes me happy. I’m not going to wake up tomorrow and go, ‘I’m so happy because I beat Max’. I honestly, deep down, don’t care about that.
"I made my people happy. That’s all I really care about at the end of the day. I’m not going to wake up happy tomorrow because I can just go and say to myself, ‘Im world champion’. It might make me smile, but it’s not going to be the truth.”

12:00 , Kieran Jackson“I have no regrets about my season.
“Of course, shame to miss out on the title but at the same time, for a long period of time I was not even thinking about the title.

11:00 , Kieran Jackson”I’m going back to Australia for a little bit, see my family and friends, give my annual hellos and goodbyes.
“I’m looking forward to some time away from racing, to be honest.
"It’s been a long, demanding season. As enjoyable as driving the fastest cars in the world is, a break now and again is always a nice thing.
“So, I’m just looking forward to not thinking about race cars and spending time with people around me."
Lewis Hamilton plans to bin his phone after nightmare season
10:00 , Kieran Jackson“At the moment I'm only looking forward to the break, just to disconnecting, not speaking to anyone.
“No one will be able to get in touch with me this winter. I won't have my phone with me and I'm looking forward to that. Completely unplug from the matrix.
“I've generally always had it around. But this time, it's going in the freaking bin.”

"When things have been good this year, I've felt unstoppable at points and to even be able to get to that point is a pretty cool feeling.
"There has been plenty of times when that has not been the case and I think I've learnt a lot of lessons on how to deal with tough moments and adversity from different directions.
"Ultimately, I've learnt a lot about myself and I've been in championship battles in the junior categories, but in F1 you've got a little bit extra to it.
"I've learnt plenty about that this year and I think that will only help me going forward."

"I am happy I cried, I didn't know if I was going to. I thought of my mum and that thought made me cry. I got a bit more emotional, pretty amazing day.”

"I've learnt plenty of things along the way and I think over the last three years I've learnt things every weekend from what Lando [Norris] does, and it's nice to know it goes both ways.
"There's plenty more years to come of intense weekends and tight battles, but ultimately, I think that has made both of us better drivers and in some ways contributed to the success that both of us have his this year."

Why are the trophies presented later this week?
Sunday 7 December 2025 15:59 , Mike JonesThe FIA’s International Sporting Code allows for competitors to ask the governing body for a right of review of events if a fresh element is discovered that could change the decision of a grand prix.
This came into focus in 2021, when Mercedes considered an official appeal of the Abu Dhabi GP race result after Lewis Hamilton lost out to Max Verstappen after a contentious application of the rules by race director Michael Masi.
However, Mercedes officially withdrew their appeal in the days that followed.
For Norris, there will be no such concerns of post-race changes.
