Nottingham City Council is consulting on extending an order which makes it a criminal offence to let dogs 'run amok and intimidate' city residents. The public protection order would cover the entire city with particular regard for children's play areas and nature reserves.
The council says before the orders were put in place in 2016 there were "significant problems caused by dog-related anti-social behaviour, nuisance and disorder across the whole city of Nottingham". Council documents state: "Reports received showed that the problems were often caused by irresponsible dog owners allowing their dogs to intimidate citizens in Nottingham and run amok within the urban areas of Nottingham without being under the full control of their owners."
In September this year the orders, making it a criminal offence to let a dog run without a lead, let a dog in a protected space or fail to pick up dog waste, will expire and the council is seeking a three-year extension. Protected spaces will include all nature reserves, school grounds and play areas in the council's administrative area.
