An employee at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel in New Orleans reported hearing two soft bangs the morning after the tragic attack on Bourbon Street. New Orleans Council Member Joseph Giarrusso stated that police are conducting sweeps in the area to check for possible explosive devices.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Alethea Duncan confirmed that one or more improvised explosive devices were discovered at the scene of the attack. Investigators are currently assessing the viability of the device.
The suspect, who drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in the death of 10 individuals and injuring 35 others, died after a confrontation with law enforcement officers. During the exchange of gunfire, two police officers sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition.
Law enforcement authorities are scheduled to hold a press conference at 11 a.m. ET to provide further updates on the investigation into the attack. Officials have advised the public to avoid Bourbon Street during the ongoing investigation.
