Explosive Devices Found after Cartel Gunfight at U.S.-Mexico Border

Warning issued for CBP agents for possible explosives near U.S.-Mexico border.

In an alarming development on the U.S-Mexican border, an official warning has been issued to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents to watch out for explosive devices. This caution follows the recent discovery of multiple Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) after a violent altercation between rival cartel factions.

The Mexican military made this discovery of ten IEDs on the Mexican side of the border following a gunfight. As a precautionary measure, the U.S. Border Patrol has alerted its agents to stay vigilant for potential explosive devices. A federal law enforcement source released details of the officer safety alert issued this week urging extreme caution. The alert advised agents to report anyone potentially armed approaching the border with possible explosive devices.

The IEDs' presence was revealed after Border Patrol agents found themselves inadvertently involved in a cartel conflict near the Trace Pilatus Ranch, east of the Sasabe Port of Entry in Pima County, Arizona. A man with a loaded AK-47 rifle, extra AK magazine, loose rounds, and a handgun was arrested on the U.S side of the border. The man informed officials about eleven armed suspects nearby. Soon after, gunshots could be heard coming from the Mexican side of the border leading to a swift Mexican military response.

The military discovered ten explosive devices packed with black powder and shrapnel. The law enforcement source reveals that drug cartels commonly use this ranch due to a gap in the border fence. This gap, which remains incomplete, is now an operational magnet for the cartel to smuggle people more than drugs.

The incident was not related to migrants carryings IEDs over the border, but a glaring demonstration of the escalating violence between rival cartels and Mexican security forces. It's also a stark reminder of the lucrative nature of human trafficking operations for the cartels and their readiness to fight for control over strategic crossing points.

This event underscores the ever-increasing dangers faced by U.S Border Patrol agents working along this border, not only dealing with armed cartel members but also the very real threat of explosive devices. Despite the IEDs being recovered intact by the Mexican military, the situation's potential danger remains an immediate concern. The incident highlights how violence along the border is escalating, presenting unprecedented challenges even while on American soil.
