Police have launched a probe after a car burst into flames near woods at a Scots park.
Emergency services scrambled to Strathclyde Park near Motherwell in North Lanarkshire after the alarm was raised at around 9.30pm on Tuesday. Horrified residents living near the scene heard explosions before racing outside and seeing the vehicle on fire.
Pictures showed the car engulfed in flames as smoke billowed up into the sky. Firefighters sent three appliances to the scene and battle the blaze for around an hour.
More images taken this morning showed the burnt out shell of the vehicle, which appeared to be a Mazda sports car, covered in police tape.
Zina Laurie, who lives nearby, told the Record: "At half past nine, we heard explosions as the windows blew out. We could see it from the corridor of our house and the fire was burning fast.
"We realised it was a car as the headlights were on. Nobody was in the park so my husband quickly phoned the fire brigade and they arrived within 20 minutes.
"The car was on fire for about an hour as I think it was full of petrol. I went to look at it this morning and there was police tape all around it."
Officers say their enquiries into the blaze are ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.05pm on Tuesday, November 1, police were called to a report of a car fire in Strathclyde Park, Motherwell. Police enquiries are ongoing."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9.37pm on Tuesday, November 1 to reports of a vehicle on fire at Strathclyde Country Park.
“Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance and firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
“There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
