Explained: Why Nottingham Forest transfer includes surprising clause

Nottingham Forest's decision to leave Lewis O'Brien off their Premier League squad list for the season half of the season and subsequently loan him out caused consternation among supporters.

Even more surprising and confusing for Reds fans was the inclusion of an option-to-buy clause in the short-term transfer. But there is an explanation behind that particular detail.

The midfielder this week joined DC United, managed by former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney, on a loan deal that ends on 16 July. It means O'Brien will only be at the Washington club for half of the Major League Soccer campaign so that he can return in time for pre-season with Forest.

There is speculation that the 24-year-old will not be at the club next season, though, due to that purchase option included in the deal. Having not started a Premier League game since October it's been suggested that he could leave Forest permanently in the summer, possibly to DC United.

But MLS rules require their clubs to have an option to buy inserted into every loan deal, regardless of whether they intend to turn it into a permanent transfer or not. At this time it is not thought particularly likely that O'Brien will stay at DC United beyond July.

When his spell stateside is over he will return to the City Ground to sort out his future. He may well remain with Forest for next season or find a new club.

Before joining Forest from Huddersfield last summer in a joint-deal with Harry Toffolo for £10million, Leeds United were interested in signing him. Blackburn Rovers had wanted to take him on loan in the January transfer window, but the relevant paperwork was not handed in on time before the deadline elapsed.
