Experts say you can eat healthily for £2.85 a day

With the cost-of-living crisis tightening purse strings across the UK, health and wellness experts say people can cut lunch costs by 72%, without compromising on nutritional value or taste. A new survey from Protein Works has revealed that almost half (46%) of Brits are spending £10 per day on breakfast, lunch and snacks, with 37% opting for a meal deal.

To encourage healthier and cheaper daytime meal choices, Protein Works has calculated a way for people to spend just £2.85 on breakfast, lunch and snacks to see them through until an evening meal - a 72% saving compared to the average £10 per day spend.

To charge batteries for the day ahead, overnight oats, protein porridges or a breakfast smoothie start at as little as 77p per portion. The slow-energy release makes for the perfect fuel throughout the day, plus they require minimal prep for anyone rushing out of the door in the morning.

Unlike meal deals, which are high in saturated fat and contain a lot of salt and sugar, meal replacement alternatives include the right amount of protein, fats, carbohydrates and fibre, plus there are multiple flavours to keep each exciting and to suit different individuals. From just £1.50 per day, there’s no reason why a quick lunchtime meal doesn’t have to be nutritious, calorie-controlled and tasty, with minimal costs and no plastic packaging.

Snacking can often be the downfall to any diet plans. Midday cravings and boredom often result in over-indulgence, extra trips to the shop and further spending. Finding a reliable snack that suits your tastebuds is key.

Mark Coxhead, founder and CEO of Protein Works, said: “We were shocked to find that so many people are spending £10 per day on an unbalanced diet. There’s no reason why you can’t be financially and nutritionally conscious at the same time and we hope our money-saving plan inspires people to try something new, without sacrificing flavour, nutrition or time.”
