What does a dehumidifier actually do? Experts explain

These appliances can speed up clothes drying times, improve air quality and more - (Joanne Lewsley/The Independent)

Condensation on the windows, clothes taking ages to dry and that telltale musty smell can all be signs that there’s too much moisture in your home. The best dehumidifiers can help, but there’s more to these machines than simply collecting water in a tank.

From tackling excess humidity to speeding up clothes drying times, the appliances have plenty of potential uses. They can help reduce condensation and create a more comfortable environment, while some people use them to make indoor laundry days quicker and easier. They’re also often touted as a cheaper alternative to a tumble dryer, although how much you’ll save depends on the model and how you use it.
