Experts advise annual health check-ups and good sleep to prevent heart attack

PATNA: The untimely demise of public figures in their 40s and 50s, like that of noted Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath (KK) at 53 on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest, has raised concerns over keeping the heart healthy in midlife. Earlier, Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar died at 46 in October last and Bollywood actor Sidharth Shukla at 40 in September last year.

Medical experts admit increase in heart attack cases in people of 25 to 55 years during their routine activities. They suggest several measures, including annual cardio check-ups, good sleep and cardio exercises to prevent such deaths. They feel that all auditoriums, public places and offics should have instruments and trained persons for cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) as primary measures to save life and buy time to rush to the hospital.

Assistant director of Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology (IGCC), Dr Nitish Kumar Ranjan said automated external defibrillator (AED) should be made available at all public places, especially auditoriums, government offices like secretariat, railway stations and zoo for providing electric shock through it in case of cardiac arrhythmias to help revive heart's functioning and buy time to rush to the nearest health facility.
