Expert weighs in on Polanski’s chances of winning Starmer’s old seat

  • Polling expert Sir John Curtice has warned that the upcoming Holborn and St Pancras by-election could be a “make or break” test for Green Party leader Zack Polanski.
  • The contest was triggered by the decision of Sir Keir Starmer to step down as an MP to focus on new work in international affairs.
  • Prof Curtice compared the situation to Andy Burnham's recent by-election in Makerfield, noting that the seat presents a tough test for the Greens given Labour's historical strength.
  • He said that Mr Polanski has “got a chance” of winning the by-election, but it is “probably not a high chance”.
  • Labour remains the favourite to win the constituency it has held since 1983, though opposition to the party's stance on Gaza could affect its support.
