Expert's tips for cheap holidays to 2023 hotspots including Sicily and Sardinia

A travel expert has highlighted her big bargain destinations of the year and offered some advice for those looking to get away but not break the bank.

Julia Lo Bue-Said, CEO of Advantage Travel Partnership, has urged people to try somewhere new this year and stay away from some of the more traditional destinations.

"There are bargains to be had by branching out, especially if a tour operator has just added a new destination to their programme and are encouraging people to travel there," she advises.

The industry insider has highlighted Bulgaria as a great place to visit in the spring and summer, due to its "wonderful beaches at a lower price point."

You can stay in Bulgaria's capital Sofia for just £117 for seven nights in March on Loveholidays, while those looking for something a little different can head to Burgas – a town on the Black Sea with sparkling water and white sand beaches.

You can get a flight to Burgas from London for a tiny £11.73 with Wizz Air.

Sicily and Sardinia are also amazing destinations which have seen an increase in flights operating from the UK, according to Julia.

In March Eastern Airways is running a return flight from London to Sicily for just £82, while Manchester to Sardinia and back is available in the same month for £88.

There are also great deals to be had if holidaymakers are willing to be flexible on dates, location and airport.

For example, there are cheaper flights to Turkey if you fly into Dalaman where you can easily visit the resort of Marmaris - easyJet has return flights from London in February from £30 each way.

If possible, it’s also worth avoiding peak travel times.

"Travelling in the shoulder season can mean cheaper flights, cheaper hotels and the opportunity of visiting major sights without the crowds," Julia continued.

"When it comes to booking the holiday, it’s always worth booking with a travel agent.

"Agents have an incredible amount of knowledge and experience in searching for the best deals available.

"They are also best placed to help consumers research the best place to visit for your budget."

When asked which destinations would grow in popularity with Brits this year, she tipped Montenegro , Estonia and Slovenia.

"They are starting to grow in interest and offer really good value too," the travel expert added.

When it comes to keeping holidays as cheap as possible, Julia has the following advice:

Book early

The benefits of booking in advance are that consumers can benefit from the early booking discounts and free child places that are on offer.

As well as having more holiday options available from duration, airport and hotels – booking early also helps consumers budget for their holiday as they know how much it will cost and can stagger payments.

Be flexible

If consumers can be flexible on the dates, location and airport they travel it makes it easier to find the best deals.

Try something new

Many of the traditional holiday destinations come with higher price tags as there is more demand for these trips.

Consumers can find some great holiday bargains if they try something new, particularly if an operator has just added a new destination to their programme and are trying to encourage more people to book.

Pre-book extras

Holiday extras such as airport parking and upgraded seats are best to book early to avoid it hurting the wallet, as booking last minute can mean more expensive costs.

Research

Consumers should make sure they do as much research as possible on their holiday before booking, so they are not hit by any extra costs.

Read the small print to make sure there are no hidden costs, find out what facilities are included and if there are local bars, restaurants and supermarkets close by to help you budget and avoid expensive taxis.

Avoid peak times if you can

For families, teachers and anyone else tied to school holidays this won’t be possible, but if you can travel outside of the peak periods then you will be able to save money on your holiday as there are some great deals available outside of peak times.

Book with a travel agent

With an incredible amount of travel knowledge and experience in searching for the best deals available, if you visit your local travel agent they can help you find the best deal and take advantage of any offers and discounts available.
