Expert's heatwave sleep tips as Met Office warn it will be an 'uncomfortable night'

An expert has shared advice on how to sleep in hot conditions.

Soaring temperatures across the country have prompted the Met Office to issue a rare amber and red heat warning. The alert started on Sunday at 1am and will remain in force until 11.59pm tomorrow.

Merseyside has recorded its hottest ever day as temperatures at Liverpool Airport's weather station reached 36C at 5pm. The sweltering conditions are set to continue into tomorrow as the Met Office warn it will be "an uncomfortable night for many".

An expert at Silent Night has said that "sleeping in the heat be a real nightmare". Hannah Shore added: "If you have difficulty sleeping during the warmer months, you should consider having a different duvet for summer and winter.

"Your summer duvet should be a lightweight duvet, and if you’re still too warm to sleep, this can be swapped for a sheet. In this extreme weather you may want to opt for no duvet at all or a light sheet. If this feels better, remove the duvet from the bed completely placing it on the floor ensuing you have maximum space in the bed."

Ms Shore also said people struggling to sleep should check their bedding is made from breathable fibres. She said: "Natural fibres are good at temperature regulating however, some people find these materials a little heavy. If that’s you, opt for polyester, as these will offer you a breathable sleeping environment but will not be as heavy."

The sleep expert also offered advice to couples during the heatwave. She added: “For couples, you might want to consider sleeping in a separate bed to your partner while the extreme weather lasts. This will help keep both of you cool!

Ms Shore also shared five top tips for getting a good night’s sleep in warm weather:

  1. Remove the duvet from your bed
  2. Ensure your PJs are loose fitting and made from breathable materials
  3. Place a bowl of iced water in front of your fan to circulate cool air
  4. Keep your curtains and blinds closed throughout the day
  5. Keep a glass of iced water, or a damp flannel, by your bed for instant cooling
