Expert reveals adding an unusual ingredient to your coffee could have health benefits

Starbucks UK has recently launched its 'Oleato', a coffee containing olive oil-infused oat milk. And now a nutritionist has revealed there could be health benefits in adding a spoonful of olive oil to your coffee.

The coffee launched in Italy earlier this year and proved to be a hit. The drinks range contains extra virgin olive oil and includes variations like lattes, cold brews and cortados.

The new collection of beverages is inspired by the Italian custom of consuming a spoonful of olive oil every day. YorkTest nutritionist Sal Hanvey has now shared the top three benefits of having olive oil in your coffee and why this is one viral trend you should consider trying.

Those with IBS might find coffee more tolerable

With IBS Awareness happening this month, adding olive oil to your morning coffee can help those who experience heartburn after drinking coffee to be able to implement this type of coffee into their diet slowly. Oil can reduce the risk of acid reflux and the stomach’s gastric contents can be released more gradually and aid better digestion.

It’s inclusive to those with coffee intolerance

Those who may suffer from symptoms of such as bloating after having a cup of coffee may be able to tolerate an olive-oil-infused version better. An analysis of over 12,500 Premium Food Intolerance Test results found that 7.5% of people are sensitive to coffee. This may be a reason why coffee drinkers often suffer from headaches or restlessness after ingesting caffeine.

Olive oil can help to mitigate these symptoms by neutralising the acidity in coffee and potentially reducing stomach inflammation.

It can reduce overconsumption

With the addition of olive oil to your morning coffee there is likely to be less of a temptation to reach for the second, third or even fourth cup as quickly. Consumable fats slow down the digestion process so adding olive oil will slow the absorption of caffeine in the body and prolong its energy-boosting effects.

Sal Hanvey says: “Too many of us overconsume coffee which can significantly affect our health, energy, hormones and even eats into our budget. When this new range is launched in the UK it really depends on the individual’s taste and preference as always with any new drink or food. It’s important to note that olive oil is an essential fatty acid, rich in omega 3 and ultimately a good healthy fat in moderation - but for those watching their weight too many of these may add on the pounds.”
