An experimental monoclonal antibody cleared dengue virus from the blood and resolved fever within 24 hours at all four dose levels tested, according to a phase 2 trial that researchers describe as the first evidence of a therapeutic effect in dengue patients.
The result matters because there is currently no licensed antiviral drug for dengue anywhere in the world. Three vaccines are licensed, but a person who develops dengue today receives fluids, fever control, and monitoring, and nothing that acts on the virus itself.
