Magpies fans expect their side to qualify for Europe again in the upcoming Premier League campaign – but only a minority of supporters are bold enough to claim they fully expect Champions League qualification to be clinched again this time around.
Among the Newcastle United fans who responded to our latest set of Big Forum questions, over half (56%) expect to see Eddie Howe’s side follow up last season’s fourth-place finish by ending the upcoming 2023/24 campaign in the top six. That’s over twice as many as say they expect to see United finish in the top four: just 24%.
That’s nonetheless a significant boost on last season’s numbers. Fans tell us in hindsight that they overwhelmingly expected Newcastle to finish somewhere between 7th and 10th in the table while just over a third of fans expected European qualification – only 9% of whom fully anticipated the top four finish they eventually achieved.
Twice as many United fans now expect the Toon to go on and win their first league title since 1927…but that still only translates as 2% of fans, compared with last season’s 1%. We admire the optimism and wish we had more of that in our own daily lives.
