Manchester United’s Mary Earps kept her number one spot for England’s Lionesses for the upcoming Arnold Clark Cup after Sarina Wiegman’s squad was announced. She will line up alongside United teammates Maya Le Tissier, Katie Zelem, Ella Toone and Alessia Russo for the mini-tournament that kicks off on February 16th.
It is the second year of the cup’s existence and England will defend their title against Belgium, Italy and South Korea in a round-robin tournament hosted in Milton Keynes, Coventry and Bristol.
Earps told the MEN: “I think all the games are carefully picked I suppose, by the staff and the team, to sort of try and prepare us as best as we can for each tournament.
“Obviously last year was great for us, we got three great games and I got to try different things so I'm not sure what the plans are for this time round if it'll be a similar sort of process and obviously that will be up to Sarina [Wiegman].
“We'll just have to see how it unfolds. But I think every single game, every single international date is gearing us, making sure we're as prepared as possible and in the best form possible come summer so that the Arnold Clark Cup will definitely be a part of that for sure.”
The Lionesses will seek to defend their title from last year's overall win against Spain, Canada and Germany. Earps continued: “I just want to win more trophies and create more memories.”
Last year's tournament came prior to England’s European Championship victory and Wiegman's side will be hoping victory this year can be the catalyst once more when the squad travel to Australia and New Zealand for the World Cup.
