Exciting Everton defender leaves Blues mid-season with new club lined up

Exciting defender Mathew Mallon has left Everton and is set to sign for Blackburn Rovers in July. The 18-year-old was a prominent member of the club's under-18s setup under Paul Tait and had broken through into the under-23s side on a number of occasions.

The right-back made his debut for David Unsworth's side in March 2021, coming off the bench in a Premier League 2 match against Arsenal to provide an assist in a 1-1 draw - playing at right-midfield in that game. He made a further three appearances at that level that term, but didn't play for the U23s this term.

Mallon has spent this term with the U18s, captaining the side on a number of occasions and also playing every match of their FA Youth Cup run, which was ended by Manchester United at Old Trafford in February.

That was his last appearance for Everton as he has been absent from the squad since. He had previously been described as "progressive" and "a modern day full-back" by Tait having made an incredible comeback from a 16-month injury layoff throughout his development in the club's academy.

The defender's scholarship with the club was set to finish at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, with conversations taking place over his long-term future.

Those ended with the decision for the youngster to leave the club, with a move to Blackburn now in the works.
