Ex-West Ham chairman David Sullivan launches lawsuit against BBC after Panorama documentary

  • David Sullivan has launched a High Court claim against the BBC, seeking more than £150 million in damages over “defamatory” allegations made in a Panorama documentary.
  • The legal action follows reports published in June by the BBC and The Times detailing accounts from seven women who alleged that Mr Sullivan engaged in sexually exploitative and predatory behaviour during the 1980s and 1990s.
  • Mr Sullivan, who stepped down as West Ham co-chairman in June to challenge the assertions, “categorically denies” the allegations and maintains that they are “factually incorrect, false, and sensationalised”.
  • Clarifying a temporary restriction negotiated with the Football Association regarding one-to-one contact with academy or women's players over a 1981 complaint, Mr Sullivan previously insisted the event never occurred and that he accepted the restriction “for a quiet life”.
  • Essex Police and the Independent Football Regulator have both confirmed active and ongoing inquiries following the publication of the allegations, while Mr Sullivan remains West Ham's second-largest shareholder with a 40 per cent stake.
