Ex-Rangers stars apologise for initial reaction to Cammy Devlin red card

Former Rangers players Andy Halliday and Steven Thomson were both forced to apologise for their initial reaction to Cammy Devlin's red card against Jablonec.

Shortly after coming on as a sub, the Australian midfielder was sent packing for a challenge that was initially missed by the referee but picked up by VAR.

Devlin seemed bemused at his fate, as did most of Ibrox.

However, Derek McInnes admitted post-match that, having seen it back, the red card was warranted. He explained that his player had been trying to get his body in front to attempt to initiate contact from the opponent to win a foul in the other direction.

Halliday and Thomson were on punditry duty for BBC Scotland and both initially said they had no idea what the red card was for.

But when they later saw footage, they apologised and said it was the correct decision.

Halliday said: "Me and Thommo have now seen a replay and we apologise for our initial analysis.

“What Cammy Devlin is doing – I actually can’t comprehend it at all.

“It looks as if he’s almost trying to dive before he receives the ball and trying to get the defender to initiate contact, and ends up planting his studs into his shin.

“There’s no defence about the red card.”

Thomson added: “You don’t see it from here. It’s at the far end of the other 18-yard box from where we are.

"“We’re thinking maybe it’s a penalty and then VAR are involved.

“We see Shankland coming on, thinking his first touch will be a penalty to score.

“Maybe this is when VAR audio would be a good thing in a stadium. Nobody had a clue what was happening and then it was stunned silence in here for a couple of minutes, everybody trying to work out what happened.”
