Ex-Rangers man Muscat reveals management discussions as he prepares for new role

Kevin Muscat has revealed he spoke to a club about taking charge as boss as the former Rangers-target prepares to take on his new managerial challenge in China.

And he admitted he turned down the chance because it 'didn't feel right.'

The ex-Ibrox defender just missed out to Philippe Clement as the successor to flop boss Michael Beale earlier this season after previously winning the J-League with Yokohama F. Marinos.

He quit the club this week after two-and-a-half years in Japan and has just taken charge of Chinese champions Shanghai Port.

Muscat will also linked with several clubs in England as well as the Rangers job, but he's revealed there was only one unnamed club he spoke to.

He said: "There were two or three opportunities throughout the season where I was contacted about certain clubs.

"There was only really one who I did speak to and the rest I didn’t speak to because I was invested in trying to win a championship.

"But seeing the challenges we were going through and people sacrificing themselves and getting injured, I didn’t think it was right.

"Then towards the last couple of games, this opportunity arose at Shanghai. The truth is, I didn’t speak to them. I rejected speaking to them for quite some time.

"And then at the end, I had a discussion with the sports director, likewise the team manager, general manager and even the president.

"They outlined what’s happened in the last four or five years. It was a frank and honest discussion. They outlined where they want to go in the next three-four-five years. It sounded like a project I wanted to be involved in.”
