Ex-Rangers hero Scott Arfield plans to open pub near Ibrox

Former Rangers star Scott Arfield is hoping to turn a vacant shop near Ibrox into a pub. The 34-year-old has submitted a planning application to open a licenced premises on Copland Road - just a five minute walk from the ground he used to play in.

The ex-gers midfielder has set his sights on 150 Copland Road, which formally served as the site of the club's official shop. The unit, which is currently empty, was most recently used as a betting shop.

Arfield, who was released from the club in May after playing 144 games, submitted an application to Glasgow City Council on May 17. The plans propose a change of use into a public bar with no cooking facilities.

Plans appear to still be at an early stage, with the latest additions to the application coming on June 2. Glasgow-based firm Ross Woods Architects are listed as agents for the development of the bar, alongside the former midfielder.

Arfield was one of the five big-named players not to be handed a new contract as Rangers manager Michael Beale is undergoing a major revamp at Ibrox this summer. He had previously stated a desire to play until he is 40 but hasn't found a new club after leaving earlier this year.

Beale admitted the decision over his future particularly pulled at the heartstrings.

He explained last month: "I spoke last week. Allan [McGregor] it is a natural thing with his age and Scott Arfield pulled on the heart strings as I felt he could still have a part to play but when you sit and talk about what Scott needs and what Rangers need, we couldn't meet in the right place. It ended amicably."

Alfredo Morelos, Filip Helander, Ryan Kent and Allan McGregor are also on the move. Their contracts won't be renewed at the end of the season.

The midfielder who started his career at Falkirk, played for English sides Huddersfield Town and Burnley before joining the light blues in 2018. He made his debut for the club on July 12 in a Europa League qualification tie against FK Shkupi of Macedonia before appearing in his first league game against Aberdeen on August 5.

A fan-favourite player, he scored 29 goals in all competitions for the club including his first professional hat-trick in a 3–0 victory against Motherwell on April 7, 2019.

Arfield shared his appreciation for the love and support he has received following news he will be leaving Rangers this summer. Taking to social media ahead of his farewell game against Hearts, the former Canadian international said: 'Thank you for all the messages and love after the news yesterday team, extremely flattered and it is very much appreciated.'

A decision has yet to be made by planning officers at Glasgow council.
