Ex-Leeds United boss gives damning verdict as he highlights reason for Premier League relegation

A lack of 'good enough' players for the Premier League was the reason for relegation back to the Championship, according to one former Elland Road manager.

Ex-Whites boss Neil Redfearn gave his verdict following Sunday's crushing home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, which condemned Leeds United to life back in the Championship.

It's been a difficult season for the Yorkshire outfit, with three managers in charge. Former England boss Sam Allardyce was brought in with four matches remaining in a desperate bid to preserve their Premier League status.

However, Big Sam could only muster one point in that time and Leeds finished second bottom after being one place outside the drop zone at the time of his appointment.

Former under 18 coach and academy manager Neil Redfearn, who had a spell as head coach in 2014 after a series of caretaker stints, gave his verdict following relegation and felt there can be no complaints.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Redfearn said: "I look at Leeds and they have not got enough players who are good enough to play at this level. It’s as simple as that.

“It isn’t as if they haven’t got the money to do it because they’ve spent a lot of money. They’ve invested a lot in youth, so get them in, put them in, they are good enough and old enough. But there has been none of that for me because they are obviously not that good, are they?"

Redfearn also lamented the decision to sack Marcelo Bielsa last season.

He added: "Since Marcelo Bielsa left, some of the big decisions have fallen woefully short. The recruitment, the managers trying to evolve the team.

"We've been having a go at the players but they are just not good enough at this level. It's not their fault they have been recruited.

"This was such a disjointed performance. They should have put Spurs to task but the side Sam Allardyce put out did not have any balance. It looked a mess.

"As we look back now, it was very hasty to get rid of Marcelo. It was a case of the club either backing him or Victor Orta - they backed the wrong man."
