What’s new: The Communist Party of China (CPC) has named Li Ganjie, a member of the party’s powerful politburo and a former governor, as head of the party’s human resources branch.
The appointment was revealed in a Wednesday article published by the state-run Xinhua News Agency, which addressed Li as the director of the Central Committee’s Organization Department during a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Truong Thi Mai in Beijing.
In October 2022, Li was elected to the 24-member political bureau of the central committee, the party’s top decision-making body, and appointed as one of the seven secretaries of the central secretariat after the National Party Congress.
The background: The 58-year-old Li was previously the governor and then party secretary of Shandong. He was one of country’s youngest provincial-level party chiefs while serving in the eastern China province in 2021 and 2022.
With a degree in nuclear reactor engineering and safety from the prestigious Tsinghua University, Li had also served as head of the National Nuclear Safety Administration and later minister of ecology and environment over the course of his career. A native of Changsha in Central China’s Hunan province, Li joined the CPC at the age of 20.
The Organization Department of the Central Committee, which controls staffing positions within the CPC, made several leadership position changes within its department, including a new deputy head, in March.
