Ex-Disney princess says you should never tip cast members - just £4 could get them fired

When you see people working hard to provide a service to others, it can feel natural to want to give them a little extra cash for their troubles - whether that's the wait staff at a restaurant, your plumber, or your delivery driver.

But one place you should never tip people is Disneyland, according to one woman who spent over 10 years working as a Disney princess in various theme park locations and on Disney cruises, the Daily Star reports.

Sarah Daniels, who posts on TikTok under the username @sarahdanielstv, revealed Disney cast members can be fired if they're caught accepting tips from park guests, which can leave them in an awkward position when they're approached by someone trying to hand them cash.

The woman - who has played Elsa from Frozen and Ariel from The Little Mermaid - said: "When you try and tip a Disney character you are putting them in a horrible position.

"Either you do it in front of the guests and then you hand someone some money and then they have to figure out a way to get out of that situation in front of a bunch of guests and ruin the magic.

"Or you tip them in a muffin or a seashell or you hand them a water bottle that has $20 (£15) in it – all of it is bad.

"They get backstage, they see that money, if someone else sees it and the person keeps it, they get fired. If no one sees it and they keep the money, they will think about it for the rest of their life."

Sarah, who is from the US, went on to add that Disney employees don't expect tips and are happy not being tipped - even though she says their pay isn't great.

She added: "This is not a tipped position. You are not better than other people because you're thinking about tipping them.

"Yes, they don't make enough money. Yes, they understand they're not making enough money. But they're there making magic for little kids and are doing it willingly.

"They've accepted the job and they're showing up and doing their job - please stop trying to put their jobs at risk. These people like what they're doing, just accept it's not a tipped position."

And one other former cast member took to the comments to agree with Sarah, stating that the risk of losing her job isn't worth the $5 (£4) tip that some people try to give her.

She wrote: "I used to be a cast member and it gave me so much anxiety when people would try to trick me into taking a tip. Risking my job is not worth your $5."

If you do want to make it known that a particular Disney cast member has done a fantastic job, Sarah says you should head to Guest Relations and make a formal comment on how impressed you were with their performance.

One person asked: "Is there a way to leave a good review of some kind for a character? If Disney saw that would it help the cast member in any way?"

And Sarah replied: "Yes please! Head to Guest Relations with the time and place you saw a character. You can leave a guest comment!"
