Ex-Deputy at Beijing Education Commission Gets 10 Years in Prison for Bribery

picture

What’s new: Liu Xiaoming, former deputy head of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 600,000 yuan ($82,900) for taking bribes, according to a statement released Thursday by Beijing First Intermediate People’s Court.

Liu is one of the latest officials to be sent to prison amid an ongoing campaign against corruption in the country’s education system. A number of former senior government officials, as well as university leaders, have been caught in graft probes since last year, including a department head at the Ministry of Education.

At a February meeting, the ministry has vowed to continuously put “high pressure” on corruption in education this year.

What’s more: Liu, 52, was in charge of sports and arts education, campus safety and logistics management at the commission. The court statement did not elaborate on the amount of the bribes he accepted.

Liu became a deputy head of the commission in October 2020. About half a year later, one of his colleagues, Zhang Yang, also a deputy commission head, was caught in graft probe for accepting bribes.
