Ex-Daily Record journalist confirms he'll stand as Labour candidate in SNP stronghold

THE Daily Record’s former Westminster editor has confirmed he will stand as a Labour MP at the next General Election.

Torcuil Crichton will stand in the Na h-Eileanan an Iar constituency, which has been held by the SNP’s Angus MacNeil since 2005.

The journalist was brought up on the Isle of Lewis and worked as the Record’s man in London for 12 years before leaving the paper last year.

In a post on social media, Crichton wrote: “He’s running. The Western Isles CLP have chosen me as the prospective Labour candidate for Na H-Eileanan an Iar.

“It’s an honour and challenge. We’ll win the seat, we’ll be the Atlantic beacon to bring home a Labour government, we’ll have a new voice for the islands.”

The Daily Record previously reported that Crichton’s selection opponent had dropped out of the race, leaving the path open to secure the party’s nomination.

Na h-Eileanan an Iar is the UK’s smallest constituency by population, made up of just 20,887 voters.

Prior to switching to the SNP in 2005, the seat had been held by Labour’s Calum MacDonald since 1987.
